According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who cites unnamed sources, there is still a good chance that iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 will launch in September 2024 as planned. The report suggests that Apple Intelligence will likely arrive in October, as part of the update to version 18.1.

With Apple Intelligence, notifications can be managed intelligently, aggregate both voice and text messages, take advantage of new writing tools, integrate ChatGPT, and have a more robust Siri assistant, among other new features.

iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 will be available on a wide variety of devices, both old and new, allowing users to upgrade to these versions. iOS 18 will support the iPhone XR (2018) and later models. The iPad Pro models released in 2018 are compatible with iPadOS 18. Additionally, iPad Air and iPad mini models from 2019 or later and iPad models from 2020 or later will support the new OS.

By delaying Apple Intelligence, which is not expected to run on any iPhone 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max devices before the rollout of the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, Apple Intelligence will remain available to developers for a longer period to integrate into their own apps. This delay also allows Apple to address any issues that might be found in the technology.

Apple Intelligence: Possible Release After iPhone 16 Launch:

Apple has previously stated that the Apple Intelligence product would not be included in the initial release of iOS 18 and iPadOS 18. Apple Intelligence capabilities may be released in stages throughout 2024 and early 2025.

iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1 betas will begin bringing AI features to developers soon. Given the relatively small number of currently compatible devices, it is expected that testing the new features will take some time.

Since the announcement of iOS 18 and related updates at WWDC in June 2024, Apple has maintained an independent yet interconnected system of Apple Intelligence. Apple Intelligence, requiring high-end devices, was presented separately from the OS during the keynote.

Due to the delay, the upcoming iPhone 16 models will likely feature iOS 18 but will lack the Apple Intelligence features at launch. Apple may use the delay to familiarize users with iOS 18 features in preparation for later releases of Apple Intelligence software.

What Can We Expect from the Apple Intelligence 18.1 iOS Update?

  • Improved Notifications: Apple Intelligence will prioritize notifications and consolidate web pages, voice notes, and other content for user convenience.
  • Enhancements to Productivity Tools: Apple has introduced new Writing Tools and a reimagined Siri, likely powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
  • Initial Launch Limitations: The initial OS release in October will lack some features, such as the major overhaul of Siri, until next year at the earliest.

Currently, Apple Intelligence is only available on iPhone 15 Pro models, the upcoming iPhone 16 series, and Macs powered by Apple silicon. Apple is expected to release the AI features in multiple updates to iOS 18 throughout this year and into 2025.
